How to Pack a Kitchen When Moving Home: Complete Pro Guide

The kitchen is the #1 room that breaks during a DIY move. Get it right using the exact sequence we use on UK moves.

Key takeaways

  • Empty the fridge 48 hours before moving day — no exceptions.
  • Pack the kitchen LAST and unpack it FIRST. You need it on day one.
  • Never pack liquids (oils, sauces, detergents) in the same box as textiles or paperwork.
  • One "open first" kitchen box with kettle, 2 mugs, tea, milk sachets, toilet roll and basic cutlery.

Two Weeks Before: Clear the Decks

Eat your way through the freezer. Don't buy fresh meat or dairy you can't consume by move week. Sort cupboards: bin anything expired, donate unopened tins to a foodbank, and reduce the "moving volume" before you start wrapping.

Count your kitchen: a typical UK 3-bed kitchen contains 220–310 separate items. That's 8–12 medium boxes. Order your materials accordingly.

Materials You Actually Need

  • 10–14 double-wall medium boxes (60cm tea-chest)
  • 6–10 small double-wall boxes (45cm book box) — for heavy items like tins & bottles
  • 2 wine-glass pack kits with cell dividers (from any moving supplier)
  • 10–15kg of plain white packing paper
  • Roll of small-bubble wrap (5m+)
  • Strong 48mm packing tape + dispenser
  • Permanent red marker for FRAGILE labels
  • Resealable plastic bags (for opened/liquid items)

Packing Sequence — In This Exact Order

DAY -3: Pack the top shelves (rarely-used serving platters, cocktail glasses, cake stands). Label "Kitchen — top cupboards — fragile". Use book boxes for anything under 10kg dense.

DAY -2: Pack baking tins, spare appliances (waffle iron, air fryer, food processor attachments), tupperware, cookbooks. Photograph food processor assemblies before dismantling.

DAY -1: Pack daily crockery & glassware using cell dividers. Pack cutlery in a single rolled-up tea towel, secured with an elastic band. Pack dry goods (pasta, rice, flour) — check every jar for leaks.

MORNING OF MOVE: Pack the "kitchen open first" box. Empty the fridge/freezer last — defrost the freezer the night before so ice doesn't leak into the van.

The Big Appliances

If your removal company charges extra for "large appliance handling", ask exactly why. At HomeGo it's always included; some companies add £80–£150 per appliance which adds up fast.

  • Fridge/freezer: defrost 24h ahead, drain fully, tape door SHUT, transport upright only
  • Washing machine: remove transit bolts or fit aftermarket ones; drain hose; tape door
  • Dishwasher: drain fully, tape door, protect top with corner foam
  • Oven: remove shelves, pack separately in bubble wrap, tape door
  • Microwave: remove turntable, wrap separately, tape door

The "Open First" Kitchen Box

Moving day ends with you exhausted at 7pm in a new house surrounded by 60 boxes. This single clearly-labelled box is the difference between tears and tea:

Contents: kettle, 2 mugs, teaspoons, tea bags, instant coffee, UHT milk sachets, sugar, kitchen roll, washing-up liquid, sponge, one dinner plate and one bowl per person, basic cutlery for 2, bottle opener, corkscrew, can opener, toilet paper, soap. Tape a bright-red "OPEN FIRST" sign to the top.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move my fridge-freezer full of food?+

No — defrost and empty it. Most removal insurance specifically excludes food/perishable contents. Cool-boxes and an overnight stay at a friend's fridge are the professional way.

Do I need special boxes for wine glasses?+

Yes — or at least cell dividers. We've seen DIY movers lose £200+ of stemware to a single wrong box. A £7 wine-glass kit protects £300+ of glassware.

How long does professional kitchen packing take?+

Two professional packers pack a typical 3-bed kitchen in 2–3 hours. Doing it yourself takes most households 6–10 hours including breaks.
