Removal VAT Charges: What Your Quote Should Show

Understand removal VAT charges, what a VAT-inclusive quote means, and how to compare moving prices fairly before booking your move in Berkshire today.

A removal quote can look competitive until VAT is added at the end. Removal VAT charges are one of the most common reasons customers see a different final figure from the price they first expected. Before booking a house move, office relocation or man-and-van service, check whether the price is VAT-inclusive, VAT-exclusive or from a provider that does not charge VAT.

For most people moving home, the figure that matters is simple: the total amount payable. A clear quote should make that figure easy to find, along with exactly what work is included.

How removal VAT charges work

VAT is a tax charged by businesses that are registered for VAT. Standard removal services, including moving household goods, packing, furniture dismantling and office relocation work, are generally charged at the standard VAT rate when supplied by a VAT-registered business.

If a removal company is VAT registered, its quote may show the service price before VAT, followed by VAT and a final total. For example, a £1,000 removal price before VAT becomes £1,200 once VAT is added at 20%. That is not necessarily an extra or hidden fee if the quote clearly says "plus VAT", but it can make a major difference when you are comparing movers.

A company that is not VAT registered does not add VAT to its charges and cannot issue a VAT invoice. This can be useful for households, tenants and landlords who are focused on keeping a moving budget under control. It is different from a VAT-registered company choosing to include VAT within an advertised price. In both cases, the key question is the same: what will you pay in total?

For a business move, VAT may be recoverable depending on your organisation's VAT position and the nature of the expense. For a private house move, it is normally a direct cost, so the VAT-inclusive total is the figure to use when deciding whether a quote is affordable.

What a removal quote should show

A proper quote does more than provide a headline price. It sets expectations for the moving day and gives you a record of what has been agreed. Fixed-price removal quotes are particularly useful because they reduce the risk of an unexpected bill caused by unclear hourly rates or missing services.

Check whether the quote confirms the following:

  • whether VAT is included, added separately, or not charged;
  • the full total payable, not only a starting price;
  • the number of movers and vehicle size included;
  • packing, dismantling, reassembly and materials where requested;
  • collection and delivery addresses, access details and booked times;
  • insurance cover and any conditions that affect it;
  • additional charges that may apply for difficult access, waiting time, parking or extra items.

You do not need a lengthy document full of jargon. You do need enough detail to know that the price covers your actual move. If you are moving from a third-floor flat with no lift, for example, that needs to be included in the survey or booking details. The same applies to a long carry from the property to the vehicle, restricted loading times, oversized furniture or a last-minute key delay.

A fixed price is only genuinely fixed when the company has been given accurate information. Leaving out a storage unit, loft contents, a large American-style fridge freezer or the need for furniture assembly can lead to a revised price, regardless of how VAT is handled.

VAT-inclusive versus VAT-exclusive prices

The simplest way to compare removal firms is to put every quote on the same basis. Ask for the final total for the same scope of work, with VAT and any known extras accounted for.

A £900 quote plus VAT is not cheaper than a £1,000 quote that includes VAT. Once 20% VAT is added, the first quote comes to £1,080. Equally, a lower all-in price is not automatically better value if it only covers transport while another quote includes packing, insurance, dismantling and reassembly.

This is where removal VAT charges can create confusion. One company may advertise an hourly rate before VAT, another may show a total including VAT, and a third may not charge VAT at all. None of these approaches tells you everything about the service. Compare the final price alongside the number of staff, vehicle capacity, timing, cover and included work.

Do packing materials and add-on services have VAT?

Where a VAT-registered mover supplies packing materials or additional labour as part of the job, VAT will normally apply to those charges too. This may include boxes, wrapping paper, wardrobe cartons, protective covers, professional packing, furniture dismantling and assembly.

Parking charges, congestion charges or permits need a little more care. A removal company may pay these costs to complete the job, but the way they appear on an invoice can vary. Ask whether they are included in your fixed price or charged separately. Do not assume that a stated removal price covers local parking suspensions, permits or building management fees, particularly for moves in busy parts of London, Reading or Slough.

Storage is another service worth checking separately. A removal team may collect your belongings and place them into storage, but the collection, storage and redelivery elements can be priced differently. Request a written breakdown if you need more than a short holding period.

Avoid surprises on moving day

The best time to clarify VAT and extra costs is before you accept a booking, not while boxes are waiting on the pavement. Give the mover a full inventory where possible and be honest about access. Photos or a video survey can help identify narrow staircases, limited parking, difficult entrances and items that require two or more people to handle safely.

Ask whether the quote is based on a fixed service price or an hourly rate. Hourly work can suit a small local move with flexible timing, but it carries more uncertainty if loading takes longer than expected. A fixed-price quote can offer more certainty for a full house move, particularly when packing and furniture services are needed.

Also ask what happens if circumstances change. Completion delays, keys not being released, late landlord approval and building access problems are common moving-day issues. A dependable company should explain its waiting-time policy and whether a same-day delay affects the agreed cost.

For urgent moves, be especially careful with short quotes sent by message. Same-day availability is valuable, but the price should still state what is included, whether VAT applies and any conditions around waiting time or extra journeys. Speed should not mean guessing what you will be charged.

Choosing value rather than a low headline price

A removal service is not just a van and a pair of hands. You are paying for planning, lifting, protection, loading, safe transport and accountability if something goes wrong. The cheapest initial number can become poor value if it excludes the work you need or leaves you exposed to add-ons.

HomeGo Removals & Packing Ltd provides fixed-price quotes, full insurance and no-VAT pricing, helping customers compare the total cost without doing extra calculations. That is particularly helpful when you are arranging a move around work, tenancy dates or a property completion and need a clear figure quickly.

Before accepting any quote, read the total, confirm the scope and ask one direct question: “Is this the final amount I will pay for the work described?” A clear answer, backed up in writing, gives you far more confidence than a low starting price ever will.
