Oxford ZEZ Pilot & College-Area Access — What Every Oxford Mover Needs to Know
Oxford Zero Emission Zone Pilot affects every OX1 removal. Our 100% Euro-6 fleet is exempt. Full breakdown of college-area access, conservation rules, and bollarded side-streets.
Oxford is one of the most pedestrianised, bollarded, conservation-zoned and access-controlled cities in the UK. National firms regularly underestimate it. Our Oxfordshire branch at Littlemore (OX4 4TN) deals with these constraints every single day. Here's the playbook.
The Oxford ZEZ Pilot — the basics
Launched in February 2022 and expanded since, Oxford's Zero Emission Zone Pilot charges £10/day for petrol/diesel vehicles entering 9 streets in the city centre between 7am and 7pm. Our entire fleet is Euro 6 — we're exempt. We don't pass any "ZEZ access fee" to OX1 customers, and we never will.
Bollarded side-streets — pre-survey required
Catte Street, Magpie Lane, Brewer Street, Pembroke Street and most of OX1's college service-gate access points are bollarded or accessible only by college permit. We pre-survey every OX1 move and arrange a college-porter slot in advance.
Conservation-area parking
Jericho, Park Town, Norham Gardens, Iffley Village and Old Headington are all conservation areas. Yellow-line, residents-only and meter restrictions apply. We absorb Oxford City Council single-yellow-line dispensation costs (currently £45) into every quote where needed — no surprise extra.
College-side vs Brookes-side moves
University of Oxford fellowship moves typically run end of Trinity (June/July) and start of Michaelmas (September/October). Oxford Brookes student halls run end of Spring (May/June) and start of Autumn (September). Booking 3+ weeks ahead is essential — both universities exhaust local moving capacity in the same fortnight.
Vehicle choice
Our OX1 default is the 3.5-tonne Luton van (350 cu ft, low-loader option for furniture). 7.5-tonne rigid only where we've personally verified access. We never send a vehicle "to try" — if access is borderline we send the Luton and do a second run rather than block a college lane.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Oxford ZEZ Pilot apply on weekends?
No — ZEZ charges apply 7am–7pm, 7 days a week as of 2024, but only within the 9 designated city-centre streets. Our entire fleet is Euro 6 so we're exempt regardless.
Will I need a parking dispensation for my Oxford move?
Often yes in OX1 conservation areas. We apply for and absorb the £45 Oxford City Council dispensation cost — no extra charge on your quote.
Can you do a college porter-lodge move?
Yes — daily. We pre-arrange access slots with the college porter and provide a named crew lead so the lodge has one point of contact.
Will a 7.5-tonne van fit my Oxford street?
Not usually in OX1. We default to a 3.5-tonne Luton for city-centre moves and only run 7.5-tonne where we've personally verified turning and parking access.
