Thames-Side Conservation Moves — Cookham, Bray, Marlow & Bourne End Access Guide
Riverside conservation-area moves in Cookham, Bray, Marlow and Bourne End. Vehicle choice, gravel drives, floor protection and Thames-side timing tips from our Maidenhead branch.
The Thames between Bourne End and Bray is some of the most expensive real estate in the country — and some of the trickiest to move. Listed cottages, gravel drives, single-track lanes, conservation-area parking, and the river ferry to Cookham mean a national firm with a 7.5-tonne rigid will either turn up and refuse the job or, worse, force the vehicle through and damage your stone setts. Our Maidenhead branch handles riverside moves weekly — here's how.
Vehicle choice — Luton, not rigid
For Cookham High Street, Bray village, Marlow West Street and Bourne End riverside, our default is a 3.5-tonne Luton van (350 cu ft, low loading height). We only deploy 7.5-tonne rigids where we've personally surveyed and confirmed both the turning circle and the load path. "Try it and see" is how driveways get damaged.
Gravel-drive protection
Most Thames-side detached properties have gravel drives — beautiful, terrible for sack-trolleys. We carry interlocking heavy-duty plastic floor matting that we lay across the gravel before any wheeled equipment goes near it. No raked-up stones, no tyre ruts, no homeowner-on-the-doorstep at 5pm.
Listed-property door & frame protection
Cookham, Bray and Marlow are full of grade-II listed cottages with original door frames. We apply soft-corner protection on every listed frame before any furniture goes through and photograph it before and after — partly for our records, partly for your peace of mind.
Thames-side timing tricks
Three timing rules our crew always follows: (1) Avoid Cookham High Street between 11am and 2pm — narrow, busy, single-yellow with no loading window; (2) Avoid Marlow Bridge eastbound during school run (3pm–4pm) — the bridge is single-track-priority; (3) Bourne End: avoid Cores End Road on weekends — gridlocks within an hour of rowing-regatta starts.
The Cookham ferry — not a problem
Cookham used to have a horse-ferry across the Thames; the modern equivalent is the SL6/SL7 boundary at Cookham Bridge. Single-track, weight-limited. Our Lutons clear it easily; 7.5-tonne rigids do not. Plan accordingly.
Storage if your river-side completion slips
Riverside completions slip more often than any other Berkshire postcode — historic conveyancing, surveys, finance lengthens. Our Maidenhead branch holds 2 cu m of storage per booking at no extra cost for up to 5 days, in case your completion runs late. Beyond that, £15 per week per cu m at the depot.

Frequently asked questions
Can a 7.5-tonne lorry reach my Cookham riverside property?
Sometimes, sometimes not. Cookham High Street, The Pound, Berries Road and most lanes off Switchback Road are single-track and unsuitable for 7.5t rigid. We pre-survey every Cookham move and default to Luton vans for the riverside cottages.
Will gravel drives be damaged during my move?
No — we lay interlocking plastic floor matting before any wheeled equipment touches the gravel. No tyre ruts, no raked stones, no scuffs.
Do you handle listed-property moves?
Yes — Cookham, Bray, Marlow and parts of Maidenhead Riverside are all grade-listed conservation zones. We carry soft door-frame protection, photograph every listed frame before and after, and never use anchor-strapping on listed banisters.
Cookham Bridge weight limit — is it an issue?
For 7.5t rigid lorries, yes. For our Luton vans, no. We route accordingly so a single-lane bridge never becomes a moving-day problem.
What if my riverside completion slips?
Our Maidenhead branch holds up to 2 cu m of your belongings free of charge for 5 days if completion runs late. Beyond that, £15/week/cu m at the depot. No 24-hour failed-completion drama.
