Reading Festival Weekend Removals — How to Survive (or Avoid) Moving House in Festival Week
Reading Festival weekend impacts every removals firm in RG1–RG6. Road closures, hotel lockouts, parking dispensations and the pricing surcharges to expect. Plus our smart-booking workarounds.
The last full weekend of August is Reading Festival weekend — 90,000+ attendees descend on Richfield Avenue, every hotel within 8 miles is sold out, the Caversham Bridge approach gridlocks from Thursday morning, and Bath Road becomes effectively impassable for commercial vehicles. Here's everything you need to know if your move falls in or near festival week.
The dates you need to avoid (or accept)
Reading Festival 2026 runs Thursday 27 August – Sunday 30 August 2026. The disruption window for removals is actually longer — Wednesday afternoon (setup traffic + festival arrivals) through Tuesday morning the following week (load-out + clean-up). Plan accordingly.
What changes during festival week
- Caversham Bridge: Northbound delays of 30–60 minutes from Wednesday afternoon
- Bath Road: Single-direction priority Friday/Saturday — moving vans heavily delayed
- A329(M) and A33: Heavy delays on all approaches to Reading Town Centre
- Resident parking: Many RG1–RG6 streets become permit-only with daily £25–£40 fees
- Hotel costs: All hotels within 8 miles fully booked by July — completion-day overnights become impossible
Our pricing during festival week
Pricing rises 25% on Friday/Saturday of festival weekend to reflect job-time doubling. We don't charge a "festival surcharge" — it's just that a same-distance move that takes 4 hours mid-month takes 7+ hours during festival weekend. Same hourly value, longer job, higher total.
Smart workarounds
Three practical options if you must move during festival week:
- Move Monday or Tuesday of festival week. Demand is normal, roads are quieter than Wed–Sun.
- Pre-stage with us. We collect on the Monday/Tuesday before, store free for up to 5 days at our Queens Walk depot, and deliver on the Tuesday after the festival. Zero stress, no premium.
- Move out of Reading entirely first. If you're relocating away from RG-postcodes anyway, schedule the outbound leg before festival week and the new-property unpack after.
Same-day RG slots during festival week
Same-day moves are not available during festival weekend Wed–Sun. Pre-festival Tuesday and post-festival Wednesday are the earliest realistic same-day slots.

Frequently asked questions
How long before/after Reading Festival is the disruption?
Wednesday afternoon through Tuesday morning the following week. ~6 days of significant traffic and parking impact.
Will I pay a festival surcharge?
No flat surcharge — but pricing reflects real job time which doubles on Friday/Saturday of festival weekend (+25% typical).
Can you store my belongings between pre-festival pack and post-festival delivery?
Yes — up to 5 days free at our Queens Walk depot.
Is festival weekend really that bad for moving?
Yes. Two-day moves often become four-day moves due to traffic and hotel issues. Reschedule if at all possible.
