The geography

Cookham (SL6 9) is on the Berkshire side, technically inside the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead. Bourne End (SL8) is on the Buckinghamshire side, part of Wycombe District. Cross Cookham Bridge and you've changed county, council, school catchment and bin-day.

Schools

Cookham primary options: Holy Trinity CofE (Ofsted Outstanding), Cookham Dean CofE (Good), Herries School (private prep, ages 3–11). Secondary: Furze Platt Senior School in Maidenhead, or grammar-school routes via 11+ exams (Slough Grammar, Reading-area grammars).

Bourne End primary options: Claytons Primary, Wessex Primary. Secondary: Great Marlow School in Marlow, or 11+ to The Royal Grammar School High Wycombe and Sir William Borlase's Grammar School Marlow.

Both villages are 5 minutes by car from Maidenhead Elizabeth-line station, so the practical London-commute is identical. Bourne End has its own branch-line station to Maidenhead — useful as a fallback if you don't want to drive but the trains run hourly and you'll usually drive anyway.

Riverside lifestyle

Both have Thames frontage. Cookham has Stanley Spencer Gallery, the National Trust commons (Cock Marsh, Winter Hill, Cookham Dean common), and is genuinely a "destination" village — boatyards, tea rooms, the Bel & The Dragon, Sunday-tourist traffic. Bourne End is quieter, more residential, has its own marina and the Bourne End Junior Sailing Club. If you want to dock a boat and not deal with Saturday tourists, choose Bourne End.

Cookham High Street and the lanes off Switchback Road are tight, single-track and conservation-listed — we use Luton vans (never 7.5-tonne). Bourne End's roads are slightly wider and 7.5-tonne is feasible for most of Cores End Road and Wessex Road. Easier removals day in Bourne End by a small margin.
